What our students say…

Emma

GB Adults Program

“Really inclusive, friendly club. As a smaller woman and after a long break from martial arts I'm really comfortable training here. The instructors make the techniques accessible regardless of your size and do a great job of breaking everything down so it's easy to follow.”

Stuart

GB Adults Program

“I've been studying at GB Harrogate for around 7 months now and it really is a brilliant place. The facility is absolutely first class and the instructors are excellent.

Probably the best testimony I can give is that my youngest daughter recently started the kid's class here - and I couldn't be more happy for her to be training in this environment. The way that they teach the kids is fantastic and strikes the perfect balance between learning, discipline and fun.”

Oliver

GB Little Champs

“Oliver started Jiu Jitsu after I realised he was struggling with his confidence and low mood in school. He was also having issues with some older boys.

The biggest benefit has been his improved confidence and how he handles himself. He enjoys learning new techniques and the friendships he;s made at class”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • For your first class, you will be provided with the Gracie Barra uniform (during the sign up process for your trial, you will be asked for an estimation of your height and weight so this can be prepared). Please wear a close-fitting t-shirt/compression top to be worn underneath.

  • We have various different membership options, depending on how you wish to pay and how often you intend to train. The best options suited to you can be discussed following your introductory class. Head to ‘Pricing’ to find out more.

  • There are 5 main belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: in order of progression, these are White, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black. Each of these belts is then sub-divided by four ‘stripes’ that are awarded by the instructor at intervals to acknowledge a student’s progress in skill, commitment to the art and achievement of their own Jiu Jitsu goals.

  • Yes! There are fantastic opportunities to compete and test yourself within the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and/or submission grappling (No-Gi). At Gracie Barra Harrogate we have an experienced competition team that will support your competitive endeavours.

  • Absolutely! Whilst we encourage and support our competitive students, the majority of our members have busy jobs and/or balance the family schedule; practising Jiu-Jitsu for non-competitive reasons such as self defence, stress relief, fitness etc.

  • We do have a drop in fee, or the option to buy a block of 5 or 10 classes for non members ‘visiting’ the school. However our monthly memberships are by far the best value for people wishing to train regularly. Speak to one of our team at your trial class to discuss which option is best for you!

  • Absolutely NOT. We do not charge for stripes or belt promotions. Whilst the Black Belt is achievable for all committed students, the belt system in BJJ has been kept simple for a specific reason. Emphasis is placed on enjoyment of the journey and the training itself; not the acquisition of belts.

  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a skill that is not acquired overnight. As such, a commitment in the form of ‘time on the mat’ spent studying and practicing is essential to your development. We recommend a minimum of 2 classes per week in order to see gradual progress toward your goals and to be eligible for progression through the grading system. Train more than twice per week, and you will see rapid improvements.

  • There are two times in your life when it is best to start BJJ; 6 years old and Today! We have members of all ages, ranging from 6 to 60 years old. We recommend trying a class before making any assumptions!

  • We do not advise you to wear a cup/box for groin protection. It is recommended to get a good quality gum shield for when you advance to live training classes.
