Gracie Barra Harrogate June Newsletter

Hi Everyone

What a month May has been! It’s always great to see numbers on the mats stay strong over the warmer months and in half term holidays, and it’s even better when we see everyone working so hard to improve their Jiu Jitsu game!

We’ve seen excellent competition performances in May. First up, we had the Yorkshire Open over at Barnsley with an excellent turn out for both kids and adults. This was then followed by 2 big ones - The British Open and the IBJJF Europeans! A HUGE well done to everyone who took part. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first competition or you’re a seasoned competitor, it’s still a big achievement stepping out onto the competition floor to test yourselves, and we couldn’t be prouder of everyone’s hard work to get there.

Coming up this month, we’ve got a fantastic up and coming Jiu Jitsu athlete visiting the club - Sula-Mae Loewenthal! We’re super excited to have her here on Friday 21st August and can’t wait to see what she brings to both the kids and adult seminars. Tickets can be purchased here for the adults seminar, and here for the GBK seminar!

The very next day, we’ve got a brave group of GB Harrogate women taking on Total Warrior in support of New Beginnings Peer Support. Please donate what you can for a really important service here in the Harrogate area. Find more details below.

On the same day, Coach Luke heads to the ADCC UK English Open Championships to take on the pro division! A HUGE good luck, Luke!

In terms of competition, We’ve got the Empire Grappling Merseyside Open in July - check out more details on how to register below!

See you on the mats,

Team GB Harrogate

Total Warrior for New Beginnings, Harrogate

A brave group of women from Gracie Barra Harrogate are taking on Total Warrior on the 22nd of June to support the New Beginnings Peer Support. Fundraising such as this is vital to New Beginnings, funding their efforts to be highly responsive to their client's needs.

Whether that is covering travel expenses to enable a 1:1 meeting face to face or to get children to childcare in the summer holidays, the cost of a video doorbell for added security at child handovers or to cover overtime to enable peer mentors to attend advocacy meetings. Every little helps!

Please support the amazing team at Gracie Barra Harrogate to support New Beginnings Peer Support by donating what you can here. You can select a predetermined amount or select £0.00 and alter to your chosen amount. Thank you!

Empire Grappling Yorkshire Open

A huge well done to Alex, Jack, Luke, Evalyn, Sofia, Oliver, Sampson and James for great performances at the Yorkshrie Open in May. It was amazing seeing you all demonstrate the brilliant progress you’ve been making in your Jiu Jitsu journeys, and even when it feels like the match didn’t go your way, there was a huge amount of positivity and lessons to take away from the day. We’re all really proud of not just the effort you made on the day, but the hard work and determination shown in getting yourself ready for competition - well done everyone!

ADCC English Open Championships

A HUGE good luck to Coach Luke who’s heading to Coventry to test himself at the ADCC Open Championships! After winning the Advanced division last year, he’s stepping up to Pro - we can’t wait to see how you get on Luke - good luck!

BJJ British Open

The following weekend, Wasim and Jack made the journey over to Manchester to test their skills on one of the busiest and highly anticipated events of the competition circuit - the British Open. Both showed fantastic work ethic and determination to get themselves competition ready - and this was reflected in their performances. Well done, guys!

IBJJF International Masters - Europe

The same weekend, Craig headed to Barcelona to compete in the European Masters, and welcomed a win in his first match! Whilst many of us enjoy competing locally and casually, Craig has continued to test himself on bigger and bigger stages. We can’t wait to see him take on the challenge next year again! Well done Craig.
